By Dr. Achal Agrawal – GI & Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgeon
Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancers are cancers affecting the digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach, intestine, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas and bile ducts.
Early detection is important because many GI cancers are more effectively treated when diagnosed at an early stage.
Common Types of GI Cancer
– Oesophageal cancer
– Stomach (gastric) cancer
– Colorectal cancer
– Liver cancer
– Pancreatic cancer
– Bile duct and gallbladder cancer
Warning Signs to Watch For
Persistent symptoms such as blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, ongoing indigestion, abdominal pain or bloating, changes in bowel habits, persistent vomiting or jaundice should not be ignored.
These symptoms can have many causes and do not necessarily indicate cancer, but persistent or unexplained symptoms should be evaluated by a specialist.
GI Cancer Screening & Diagnosis
Depending on the symptoms and risk factors, doctors may recommend endoscopy, colonoscopy, ultrasound, CT/MRI scans, stool tests or biopsy. Colorectal cancer screening is particularly important, with screening for average-risk adults generally beginning around age 45.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic surgery may be appropriate for selected patients.
When Should You See a Doctor?
Do not delay medical consultation if you have persistent digestive symptoms, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, jaundice or a significant family history of gastrointestinal cancer.
Dr. Achal Agrawal focuses on the evaluation and surgical management of gastrointestinal diseases and GI cancers. Early awareness, appropriate screening and timely treatment can make an important difference.
